Post Lions Drag Strip
A few people might know that the starting rollers for Lions drag Strip were designed in a small coffee shop on Signal Hill in Long Beach. Present were Mickey Thompson, Art Aarfons, Vic Edelbrock Sr., and John Thomas Woods. John Woods was my father. The rollers were drawn out on a white and red tablecloth in the coffee shop. when they got doen with the design, they had to pay for the tablecloth, transfer the design to a D sheet, then wash the tablecloth and return it to the coffee shop. The starting rollers were used by most of the big names during the day as may top fuel dragsters of the day used an in and out box and were very finicky to start.

When you paid your entry fee to race. you could pay$1 to use the starting rollers which pretty much guaranteed that your motor would fire. If you failed to pay for their use and your motor did not fire it was tough luck.

Paul Woods
